Please post your ideas about what you undertand about the inquiry process. This needs to be completed by the end of term one and again in term four.
Term One
Maungaraki started the journey of inquiry in 2005. As a staff we visited Russel Street School and Willeston School, both in Palmerston North. After taking some of the ideas we explored inquiry within our Habits of Mind framework. At the end of 2005 we went to Paremata School and were shown an interesting model which they had adapted. We decided to trial that model, with a school wide inquiry. 2006 saw us continue to explore with a school wide Inquiry topic on Heat. In 2007 we have planned our next inquiry topic based around space.
We have found inquiry very rewarding. It can be a leap of faith as a teacher to "Let go of the reins" and it can be intensive in the workload. Planning is exciting and being ready for anything is an interesting process, after all you don't know what you don't know. We still have interesting discussions on the "So what" phase of the process, but over all I believe our staff can see the benefits of this process far outway the problems.
